Rest and sleep are essential for life, for healing, and for maintenance of health.
Rest is a period of inactivity during which the various systems of the body can restore their energy and nutrient supplies. We need physiological rest, sensory rest, and emotional/mental rest.
Sleep is the complete cessation of all consciously induced physical, mental, emotional and sensory activity. Sleep is a time when all of the faculties, systems, nutrient and energy supplies are cleansed, rested, and replenished.
Do you fall asleep whenever you sit still for a few minutes, especially after eating or exertion? Do you fall asleep in strange places? Do you fall asleep when you should be working? Do you have trouble falling asleep and then toss and turn all night, awaken several times or sleep fitfully and wake up exhausted? Or do you sleep like a baby? In today's fast-paced, stressful world, we often refuse to rest even when we know we are ill. Lack of proper rest takes it's toll on the body, and the need for rest is particularly crucial when our bodies are under siege from foreign invaders. While you lie quietly on your bed, your body is actually mobilizing all of it's energy and resources to do battle with and subdue the virus or bacteria. So, don't aid the enemy by refusing to rest!
If the body grows tired and sleepy during the day, it is needing to rest. Take a short 5 to 30 minute nap. It is not necessary to sleep during this period, just relax and rest. Although you may think you'll have trouble falling asleep at night if you nap, usually the reverse is true. An extremely toxic, exhausted, or emotionally/mentally tired person often suffers from insomnia. The daytime nap will help compensate for this.
